April and May

Things are looking good in the field right now. With all the raspberries leafing out and rhubarb coming up its really starting to fill in. The Blueberries and gooseberries have even begun flowering (and now I have the unfortunate task of snipping the flowers off to redirect the plant’s energies to its roots.)

It’s been a dry spring overall. The biggest job Sarah and I have had this spring has been watering. We take our buckets down to the stream below the field and haul water up to the plants. I’ve also been raking and hand weeding in the raspberries and rhubarb patch. Soon I’ll finish up mulching the elderberries and blueberries. Throw in some mowing and slow work on the herb garden and it’s a complete picture of April and May on Bramble and Berry Farm.

  1. >Wow, Jeff! Your field looks great…but you have to walk down that hill, with all the mesquitos and mud, and carry buckets of water back up??? That is dedication! So happy for you that you are able to make your dream come true 🙂

  2. >i saw blueberry flowers for the first time last weekend, or at least finally recognized them for what they were. they're awfully pretty aren't they? but probably not after snipping 1 billion of them…
